Shock raises record-breaking total at annual Charity Campsite
Starting on the 28th February, Shock Radio and TV took part in a 24-hour broadcast for charity. This year, the event raised money for Mind in Salford, a charity close to many at the university.
This year’s broadcast was hosted by Olly Hiscocks and Anna Stelfox, lead by Emma Nelson for the second year in a row. The day was jam-packed, with each hour being produced by different shock members. We had all sorts going on, including a game of the ‘Traitors’, Josh Reid releasing his inner Bradley Walsh as host of ‘The Chase’, Campsite Cocktails courtesy of Adam and Alex, and ‘Bush-tucker Trials’ from Issy Corbidge, which included eating vegan salmon, and bolognese… from a pouch!
Alongside the action at base camp, we also had two teams battle in a ‘Race Across Manchester’ challenge. The two teams, Benny & Josh and Thomas & Jacob were required to complete a series of challenges. Produced by Aaron Walkden and Ciara Aston, challenges included sinking a pint in three Wetherspoons, visiting three museums, a penalty shoot-out at Bury FC and buying a CD for under £5. The race kept the studio on the edge of their seats, with Benny and Josh coming in victorious around 7pm.

As the early hours commenced, tiredness kicked in. However, the overnight team kept up their spirits with a karaoke hour, followed by a RuPaul drag race hour. Olly and Anna successfully made it all the way to 9am, completing the 24-hour broadcast.
In total, the Charity Campsite broadcast raised over £1600 for Mind in Salford - a stellar achievement. Emma Nelson, lead organiser said: “Producing the Charity Campsite has been one of my biggest achievements, but the best part was that it was a true team effort. Everyone involved was amazing, and seeing everything come together made me incredibly proud to be a part of it. Raising £1,665 for a charity that supports so many in the local area is just incredible.”
Head of Shock Radio, Matt Hallsworth added: “It always amazes me how a group of students can come together, collaboratively and put on a broadcast that’s engaging and entertaining across 24 hours, getting so many different people involved. To be a small part of it was such fun, even if my voice did hurt after the karaoke! Mind in Salford is such a special charity to be raising money for. Looking after ourselves mentally is so important and I’m so glad we could highlight that and raise an incredible amount of money.”
Shock’s Network Manager Alfie Mulcahy said: “I’m so pleased that in it’s fourth year Campsite seems to be going from strength to strength - despite a few setbacks and a few stressful days for us we managed to raise over £600 pounds more than last year - making it our most successful yet. I am so glad we made the decision to support Mind in Salford this year, as they have been amazing to work alongside”
Charlie Parkes, whose hair was dyed Mind blue during the broadcast said it had been an “absolute honour” to have taken part. Salford’s very own Bradley Walsh, Josh Reid, emphasised that it was a team effort, saying “there was definitely a point when I thought I wouldn’t last the full 24 hours, but I think having everyone around us really helped and that joint effort pulled us together”.
What is certain is that Charity Campsite is a major part of the Shock Radio and TV calendar, and having raised a record amount of money, the excitement and countdown to next year’s event begins now!
