It's Early Days. But what can we learn from the Premier League's opening weekend?

The new Premier League season kicked off last Friday with Manchester United kicking off their campaign with a 1-0 victory over visitors Fulham and on Sunday, Manchester City travelled to Stamford Bridge where they secured a 2-0 win on the road. Although not much can always be told from the Premier League's first few games, what can we learn from this weekend's results and what they mean for clubs this season with added insight from fans.

Manchester United 1-0 Fulham

Manchester United will leave it late to secure a win, and will struggle up front this season again, however the reds will always seem to get the job done again. The red devils took until the 87th minute to take the lead against London visitors Fulham achieving more possession but only marginally at 56% over Marco Silva's team. The winning goal came from youngster Josh Zirkzee scoring on his premier league debut following a move this summer from Bologna. Here's what shock sport's Fin Attwood and reds fan had to say on Friday's game:

'The opening game of the premier league season is always a nervous one, particularly as a Manchester United fan. However Friday's game showed signs of promise for the season, particularly the new signings of Zirkzee, who came on as an impact sub, and also Mazraoui who had a commanding debut. If we can improve on our out of ball possession then, it will be a season to look forward to.'

Ipswich 0-2 Liverpool

The Tractor boys' spirit won't be easily broken this season, as it took Liverpool an hour to break the deadlock. As always, Egyptian Mo Salah scored on the opening day of the season, now registering 300 goal involvements for the club he signed for in 2017. However, Ipswich town showed promise in the game with the likes of Omari Hutchinson and Axel Tuanzebe making themselves known to Premier League fans with the latter spending time at Manchester United and Aston Villa in the top flight. Here's what Ipswich fan and our very own Adam Skinn had to say about his team's PL debut day performance:

'It's been 22 years since Ipswich Towns relegation from the premier league, the tractor boys were back and playing Liverpool in their opening game. Portman Road was packed out with a 30,000 capacity crowd for what would be many town fans first chance to see their team in the top flight. The blues came out strong, and the best chances fell their way in the first half. A headed shot on goal from Greaves and a couple of half chances from Hutchinson lifted the crowd but didn’t trouble Alison in the Liverpool goal. The away team began to show their class in the second half, with players like Dias and Jota lighting up the pitch. Countless chances fell Liverpools way in the second half with Salah assisting Diogo Jota on the hour mark then bagging a goal for himself five minutes later. The rest of the game included plenty of Liverpool chances with quality saves and last ditch defending from the Ipswich back line. The game finished Ipswich 0-2 Liverpool, with three league points heading back to Merseyside. The Ipswich Town squad gave a good account of themselves, with 11 players making their Premier League debut, however the challenge doesn’t get easier for the newly promoted side as they head to the Etihad to face Manchester City in their next match.'

Arsenal 2-0 Wolves

One of last season's title contenders opened their PL campaign at home to a travelling Wolverhampton side with German forward Kai Havertz and starboy Bukayo Saka on the score sheet after the gunners had double the amount of shots as the away side. Mikel Arteta will hope his side can have another go at stopping favourites Manchester City from another record breaking season and 5th consecutive title.

Everton 0-3 Brighton

Under new boss Fabian Hurzeler who (at 31) is also the Premier League's youngest head coach, Brighton and Hove Albion headed to merseyside to face an Everton side who last season retained PL status despite a battle last season with several point deductions and more looming. Brighton emerged victorious with goals from Mitoma, Wellbeck and Adingra but with Everton's left back Ashley Young sent off in the 66nd minute turning the home side's luck from bad to worse. Sean Dyche's side have now lost their last three PL opening gamers.

Newcastle 1-0 Southampton

Tensions were also high this last weekend at St James' Park where Fabian Schär was sent off for the magpies following a tussle with Brereton with the Sain's forward hitting the floor. Newcastle number 7 Joelinton scored the match winner right before half time with Isak squaring the ball to the brazilian to put the toon army up before the break. It wasn't an awful display from newly promoted Southampton taking 78% of the ball from last season's champions league club Newcastle as well as 19 shots to the home sides 3, hopefully if Southampton take these positives into their next few games, points will be coming back to St Mary's.

Nottingham Forrest 1-1 Bournemouth

Bournemouth clinched an 86th minute equaliser to take a point home from the City Ground courtesy of Antoine Semenyo which will frustrate Forrest fans whose team had most of the play at times and will be disappointed with just a draw. However, Ouattara did score what looked to be an original equaliser in the first half for the cherries but was ruled out by VAR for being offside despite a great set piece display from the visitors.

West Ham 1-2 Aston Villa

Jhon Duran looked set to leave Villa for the hammers this season with the deal falling apart despite the Columbian striker pulling out the iconic hammers sign on an Instagram live stream. No one would have thought that he'd be the one to score and secure the winner for the travelling claret and blue fans at the London Stadium last Saturday. Villa opened the scoring with new signing from Everton Amadou Onana scoring a bullet header just four minutes into his Villa debut. However, a controversial VAR decision saw new manager Julen Lopetegui's side level with Soucek being brought down by Cash and the referee pointing straight to the spot with Lucas Paquetá converting. However, it was written in the stars for Jhon Duran to be the hero for the away side with a fantastic strike to put three points on the board for Emery's Villains and apologising to the travelling fans with his celebration.

Here's what Villa fan Jodi had to say on her team's opening day winner:

'Of course it had to be Duran to score the winner! Convincing Villa PL debuts from Onana and Nedeljković and Maatsen from the bench. Emery's substitutions were key to us digging deep to find the winner and to outpace West Ham in the second half. The likes of youngsters Jaden Philogene and Kosta Nedeljković really helped on the right side of the pitch to carry the ball forwards and subsequently into midfield to Duran to slot away the winner. We move onto Arsenal next week at Villa Park where we welcome the challenger after doing the double over them last season.'

Brentford 2-1 Crystal Palace

Brentford's win over Crystal Palace sees them remain unbeaten in all four of their PL openers since their promotion in 2021 with goals from Mbeumo and later Wissa (to rectify Ethan Pinnock's own goal). Earlier in the match, it looked to be Eze for Palace who opened the scoring with a superb free kick however the referee blew for a foul from Hughes on Brentford's Collins in the box meaning the goal was chalked off, one sure to frustrate Palace fans against London rivals the bees. A very successful start to 24/25 for Brentford looking very convincing in front of goal with striker Mbeumo's goal the highlight for sure, however Palace will walk away from this one disappointed and thinking how the game could have gone if Eze's stunning set piece was allowed to put them ahead first.

Chelsea 0-2 Manchester City

After much scrutiny about their large squad size and new manager Enzo Maresca, Chelsea had a lot to prove to their home fans in this fixture, but all they did was show that despite a new boss and many a new signing, the blues may struggle just as much in this year's campaign. The goals came from city's star striker Erling Haaland who looks to be in as good form as ever, great news to city and fantasy football fans alike, and Kovačić adding to the scoring in the 84th minute with a shot from 25 yards out, beautifully controlling the ball with his chest first to score against his former club.

Here's what City Fan Max Hamlin had to say about his team's performance,

“A very comfortable first game of the season, Kovacic played fantastically in place for Rodri and sealed it with a brilliant finish. Rico Lewis will be a star very soon, unbelievable performance from him at such a young age. Total domination for City all game, now roll on Ipswich at home next week”

Leicester City 1-1 Tottenham

The return of Monday night football saw the foxes face off against Spurs with the lilywhites opening the scoring with defender Pedro Porro flicking a great delivery into the bottom right corner of Hermansen's goal. However, 12 minutes after half time, Jamie Vardy at 37 re-announced himself to the top flight scoring an equaliser for Leicester poaching the ball into the net at the far post proving his instinct as a Premier League winning striker once more.
