Invincible victory at the oval: The Hundred 2024 Day One
Day one of The Hundred 2024 kicked off with a blast as it was a double header sweep wins for the Oval Invincibles. The home side managed to beat away team Birmingham Phoenix in both team's matches with the women winning 150-5 and the men winning 93-2.
The first match saw stars Alice Capsey and Paige Schofield’s cracking 123 run partnership to take their side to a confident start. Phoenix fought back wit
h breakthrough wickets from Emily Arlott reducing the run rate to a defendable 150 runs. The second innings began with a controversial challenge from Marizanne Kapp as during her first set of five she threw the ball towards Suzi Bates in an effort to stump her. Bates defended herself by throwing her bat up and as a result a penalty of 5 runs was added to the Phoenix’s run chase.
However, after a phenomenal early breakthroughs from Kapp, Amanda-Jade Wellington and more the Invincibles took crucial wickets of dangerous players such as Suzi Bates, Elise Perry and Sophie Devine early without them making a dent on the run chase.
As for the men's sides, they struck early with every chance taken whilst bowling. Star overs from Adam Zampa (3-11) Mohammad Amir (2-7) and Will Jacks (8-2) crumbled the Phoenix’s attack making sure a solid partnership was off the table, reducing them to 89. Vicious batting from Dawad Malan (24 off 22) and skipper Sam Billings (31 off 28) saw the side race to victory in only 69 balls claiming that first sweet double header success for the side.
Day two of The Hundred 2024 sees the debut of last years women’s victors Southern Brave and opponent London Spirit face off. Coverage begins from 3pm tomorrow on BBC Sport and Sky Sport Cricket.
