Question Time for the Sabbatical Officer Candidates

Candidates for the Students’ Union elections completed a round of questions at the New Adelphi theatre on Friday.

The two hour Question Time event covered issues including mental health, the National Student Survey and employment opportunities for Salford graduates.

Students vote every year to rotate the University’s Sabbatical Officers in the Arts & Media, Business & Law, Health & Social Care, Science & Technology, and Presidency groups.

During a debate on policies, Arts & Media candidate Jordam Sim criticised other campaigners for misleading students, claiming his policies "are promises which I can keep” and that others were “promising things that they honestly have no power over.”

Others accused previous SU officers of letting students down on policies such as holding the University to account on its own promises and improvement of facilities.

Current SU President Ceewy Ochoga, who is standing for re-election, insisted however that “unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve seen the change that has happened.”

Science & Technology candidate, Danielle Simons, called for price reductions in student shops such as on Peel Park campus, saying that life is “too expensive” for the students she’s spoken to.

Presidential candidate Rachel Williams meanwhile said that “we need to question the National Student Survey” in regards to the Boycott the NSS campaign. The SU are currently being supportive of the survey and have encouraged final year undergraduates to participate.

Voting for the Sabbatical Officer elections will be open from the 6th to the 9th March. Results will be announced on the 10th March in Maxwell Lower Hall at 5pm.
